When she was in her mid-twenties, Denise Nadalini started experiencing excruciating pain associated with her periods.

When Nadalini sought medical help, doctors told her to manage the pain with over-the-counter medication. She says she felt dismissed, calling the experience, “exhausting and deflating.” As her quality of life continued to suffer into adulthood, she eventually quit her teaching job. “I wasn’t sleeping and was in constant pain.”

On the eve of her 50th birthday, Nadalini knew something had to change. She had suffered 25 years of chronic pain and she’d had enough.

Nadalini was referred to Dr. Nucelio Lemos, a pelvic surgeon and gynaecologist at Mount Sinai Hospital, who performed laparoscopic surgery to investigate the cause of her pain.

“At Mount Sinai, a team of doctors works together and communicates with one another, which I had not experienced in the 20 years leading up to my surgery.”

Previous to coming to Sinai Health, Nadalini says, “Doctors were looking at only one aspect of my pain. At Mount Sinai, a team of doctors works together and communicates with one another, which I had not experienced in the 20 years leading up to my surgery.”

“Pain is not normal,” says Nadalini. “It’s your body’s way of saying something is not right.”
